Itinerary Preview
Day 1: Mekele to Danakil Depression (Hamed Ela)
- Depart early from Mekele and drive towards the Danakil Depression.
- Pass through Afar villages and interact with the locals.
- Visit the salt miners at Lake Asale and witness the traditional salt-cutting process.
- Overnight camping in Hamed Ela under a stunning star-lit sky.
Day 2: Dallol and Sulfur Springs
- Morning drive to Dallol to explore its vibrant sulfur springs, hydrothermal fields, and unique mineral formations.
- Visit the famed “Colorful Earth” phenomenon.
- Continue to the salt flats and observe caravans transporting salt blocks.
- Return to Hamed Ela for camping and dinner.
Day 3: Erta Ale Volcano
- Drive towards Erta Ale, Ethiopia’s most active volcano.
- Trek to the summit in the late afternoon and witness the glowing lava lake.
