Itinerary Overview
Day 1: Mekele – Danakil Depression – Hamed Ela
- Morning departure from Mekele in 4WD vehicles.
- Pass through breathtaking desert landscapes en route to Hamed Ela.
- Explore salt miners’ activities at the Lake Assale (Salt Lake).
- Enjoy a vibrant sunset at Hamed Ela, a small Afar settlement.
- Overnight: Camping at Hamed Ela.
Day 2: Hamed Ela – Dallol – Hamed Ela
- Morning drive to Dallol, the lowest point in Africa (116 meters below sea level).
- Explore vibrant landscapes with multicolored hot springs, salt canyons, and mineral deposits.
- Visit the salt mines and traditional camel caravans.
- Return to Hamed Ela for dinner and rest.
- Overnight: Camping at Hamed Ela.
Day 3: Hamed Ela – Erta Ale
- Travel to Erta Ale, an active basaltic shield volcano.
- Evening trek to the volcano’s summit (approx. 3 hours).
- Witness the mesmerizing lava lake, one of the few in the world.
- Camp near the crater for a night under the stars.
- Overnight: Camping at Erta Ale.
Day 4: Erta Ale – Mekele
- Early morning descent from Erta Ale and journey back to Mekele.
- Scenic drive with stops for photography and rest.
- Late afternoon arrival in Mekele.
